Experienced Workers

My daughter has worked in my shop for a number of years. She does the leather work, lines and pads the cases, finishes the bellows, and does the major part of the tuning. She has been associated with concertinas her whole life as this photo shows. She now has a son of her own, just a bit younger than she was when I took this pictures quite a few years ago. fedgley@cogeco.ca

More Pictures

This is Heritage number 408.....a little bit fancier, with Mexican bocote wood body and handles, both capped with ebony. As with all Heritage Concertinas, it was made using steel concertina reeds with brass reed shoes dovetailed into a hardwood reed pan. This one went to a player in Toronto. I am currently working on another Heritage which has an ebony body with bocote trim. It should be ready for sale in a few months. Contact me at fedgley@cogeco.ca .

New Heritage Model Available Immediately

This kind of situation occurs from time to time due to the economy. I was about a week from completing one of my concertina-reeded instruments when the customer notified me that due to financial pressures he was unable to take delivery on that instrument. It is now available right away. It is solid ebony, with a solid hardwood reedpan, steel concertina reeds in brass frames, early 20th century design grill etc. I recently took it to the Squeeze-in in Massachusetts where it got very good reviews from knowledgable players. Please send me an e-mail at fedgley@cogeco.ca if you would like more details, or call me at 519-991-3100.

Trade -ins Accepted on Certain Models

My aim, over the past 14 years has been to make the best concertinas I can make. I haven't been in the market to trade in used instruments. However, I realise that well-made concertinas are not inexpensive. I would like to help out in this regard. Other makers are giving full purchase price of a Rochelle purchased from them to be applied to the purchase price of a new concertina. For a limited number of instruments I am offering this:

I will give credit of a Rochelle, in good condition, as a trade-in towards any concertina I make. The amount I give will be determined by the price of the model concertina they select. In other words 10% of the final purchase price of any model. A Session Box would get a $230 reduction in price, and other Italian-reeded concertinas models a 10% trade-in credit on the price of that model. The Heritage model, with the current price of approximately $4300 would receive a $430 credit on the purchase price. Your Rochelle would be sent to me two weeks before the shipping date of the new instrument for me to make sure it is in good working order. The invoice would be sent to the purchaser with the 10% reduction applied. This offer would is good for the first three people who apply for it, only. If you are interested, please e-mail me at fedgley@cogeco.ca .

The 2013 Squeeze-in (NESI)

I will be attending the 2013 Squeeze-in on September 27th to the 29th. I will have a couple of concertinas for fellow squeezers to try out, as well as a few CDs. I hope to see you there. I will be doing a few workshops on the anglo, as well. Initial plans are to teach a sand jig from the minstrel era, as well as a Lancashire clog dance.

Heritage #406

Destined for Ireland.....
UPDATE: The concertina has now arrived and I have received the following e-mail:

"I got the concertina today!
The concertina looks more beautiful than I expected, and the sound...I'm surprised about it.
Because it is quick response, it catches nuance of player's expression.
I felt like concertina sang a song when I played first time.
I will play this long time in my life and treat it carefully.
Really thank you so much for making the beautiful concertina.
Best Wishes,
N.K.

I appreciates feedback like this. Thank you, N.K.

North American Fleadh Winners

Just a short post with a recent e-mail from a customer. The name has been eliminated due to privacy concerns, but the rest of the e-mail speaks for itself.

"Frank,

Just wanted to let you know that A____ and her Edgley will be heading back to Derry for the Fleadh. She placed first in 15-18 concertina. I think the Under 12 winner also had an Edgley.
During a session on Saturday night it was like an Edgley convention. A-----, C----- and two older gentlemen were all playing your instruments."

#402 Heritage

This photo is a bit late getting on the site as I am working on 406 now. #402 was bound for the west coast. The purchaser requested very high handles on this one, and it required an additional brass strap hold down. In this photo, it has just been put together in the shop

Update

I'm very pleased with the responses I have been getting about the new Heritage Model:

"Hello All,

Last summer, Frank Edgley announced he would be building a line of concertinas using traditional style reeds. I got to try his prototype and then put an order in for one. It recently arrived, #401, the first production model. I have been greatly enjoying this new concertina... It looks and sounds fantastic! He wanted it to sound as good as possible with nothing left to guesswork, so in addition to the traditional style reeds he cloned the reed pan geometry of a vintage Wheatstone Linota. I would say that it worked - the instrument has a wonderful tone. He does put his usual action mechanism on it, which I have always found to be so easy to play. It's very responsive. In terms of appearance, mine is mostly black, to look as traditional as possible, though there is just a bit of edge trim in Mexican Bocote to reveal it as something new. (However, he will do whatever exotic wood one would like.)" ---TL

"My new Heritage concertina sounds so sweet my wife is getting jealous."---DW

I have been playing the prototype almost exclusively for six months now. I'm very pleased! Production models have all had solid hardwood reedpans, and sound great. I made the prototype using birch aitcraft grade laminate as it was a prototype, and it sounds really good. However, the solid hardwood reedpans which I have used on all the production Heritage models (going to customers) sound better. Nevertheless, I used the prototype for all the St. Patrick's gigs, and I couldn't be more pleased with it's sound, especially as it was the first one.

Upcoming Performance

I will be performing, in concert, on March 10, with my band, "Finn McCoul", along with the "North Atlantic Drift", on March 10, 2:00 PM, at MacKenzie Hall, in the Old Sandwich district of Windsor. I will be using my Professional Model Bb/F concertina, my C/G Heritage Model concertina, as well as Highland pipes. My fellow band members are Tim Logsdon, mandolin and cittern; David Light, guitar and vocals; and Frank J. Edgley on fiddle. The North Atlantic Drift features Sligo-born and bred Brian Taheny on tenor banjo and guitar; Cape Breton master fiddler, Dan MacDonald; and Ross Griffiths on pipes, whistles and bodhran. This promises to be a really good show. If you are in the area, contact me at 519-991-3100 for ticket information.

The New Heritage

I have completed two more Heritage Model Concertinas. These instruments will not disappoint their new owners..... Good strong tone capability, without harshness or stridency, and also capable of being played very softly, offering a full range of dynamics.
Having had thirteen years of experience making concertinas with Italian-style reeds, and over thirty years of experience repairing and restoring antique vintage instruments with "concertina reeds," I know what sound I am looking for and what makes a good concertina, and have the skills, tools, and knowledge to do so.
These two concertinas will soon be off to their new owners on the west coast of the US, as soon as tuning is completed, and the cases made for them. Pictures to follow soon.....

Customer Information Needed

I was contacted on my mobile phone (cell) a few days ago while I was driving in my car. (Don't worry. I have bluetooth in my car.) The person who contacted me asked whether I had received his order form. I wasn't sure at the moment, but since I had printed a few orders the day before, I assumed that I had. When I arrived at the workshop I realised that I had not, and I can't find anything in my "Received Messages" on my e-mail. If you are the person who called me around Christmas, please send me another e-mail, so I know your contact information.
Thanks.....
